I think it was around 2001 when I first started playing around with chainmail, and I wasn't very good at it. I ended up giving it up altogether sometime in 2002 and didn't pick it up again until four years later. I have no idea what happened in that four years while I wasn't weaving rings, but when I picked it up again, it all just clicked into place. Of course, finding a supplier for pre-made rings certainly helped (and on that note, I recommend The Ring Lord to anyone who makes chainmail or who wants to try learning). Whatever it was, I've been addicted to chainmail ever since, and I love experimenting with new weaves and new jewelry designs.
